Uncommon Heater Repairs You Should Know About

static-vent-for-roof-ventilation

Your heater will run into problems throughout its life cycle. Blown fuses, parts that need to be replaced, and new air filters. It’s something that every heater owner comes to expect, but there are a few repairs that always come out of left field.

If you need HVAC repair in Monticello, it’s important to know what the odd possibilities are that your repair won’t be routine or run-of-the-mill. Let’s talk about some of the most bizarre repairs that you could run into.

Rodents Eating Your Ductwork

They’re not eating through your ducts because they’re hungry; they’re doing it because they want warmth. They can tell there’s heat coming from those shiny metal tubes, and they want in.

When critters get into the ductwork, your energy efficiency tanks. All that warm air escapes and doesn’t get vented into the rooms of your house like you wanted.

Even worse, that warm air sits in dark parts of your attic and creates moisture. That moisture turns into mold, and the mold eats through any available wood. A single raccoon could cause wood rot; that’s how serious this is.

The best way to detect issues like this is to listen to your ductwork when you turn your furnace on. If there’s forced air, it should cause a critter to move around even a little. Check the vents in all of your rooms to make sure sufficient airflow is reaching each vent.

Water Leaks

Nobody really thinks of water being the reason their heater is on the fritz, but it could be the case. Water damage can cause a lot of additional harm beyond your heater, such as:

  • Mold Growth: Mold grows in dark, damp spaces, and it can spread quickly. Beyond your ductwork, this can damage the structure of your home.
  • Instability: Water damage turns to wood rot. Mold is the start of your problems, but long-term damage can cause a lot more issues that result in the instability of your home.
  • Electrical Damage: We all know that electricity and water don’t play well together. When the electrical components of your heater get wet, it results in serious damage.

Your Fans Are Set Too High

Your heater can blow cool air even if you know it’s running. This doesn’t mean the heater itself has gone bad, but it could mean that the safety for your fan speed is broken.

There’s a safety feature that prevents your fan from reaching extremely high speeds. Think about how a floor fan cools your room: the higher you turn it up, the cooler the air is that comes out.

That’s a bit of a problem when you’re trying to heat a space. If the fans are running at high speeds, you’re wasting electricity and your heater has to run for longer.

Uncommon Problems, But Still Possible

Now that you know what problems could spring up, you can be on the lookout for any signs of rodent infestations or water leaks that could threaten your HVAC system and property. If you need heater repair, hesitating only makes problems (especially problems like these) even bigger.
